I’d like to state for the record that I am a tremendous fan of Simon R. Green.  I have more respect than I can adequately express for a man who can spread five series across two genres and not get himself mixed up.  I picked up Mr. Green’s Something from the Nightside in an effort to feed my urban fantasy addiction, and in doing so made myself into a full-blown Green-a-holic.

This first entry in the Nightside series introduces us to John Taylor, a not-quite-PI with a mysterious past and a special knack for finding things.  After being hired to find a wealthy businesswoman’s troubled daughter, John heads back into the Nightside…a neon-lit section of London where magic and dark happenings run rampant…and finds himself hip-deep in trouble.

Mr. Green treats us to our first visit to the Nightside and all of its interesting inhabitants.  We’re taken through dark alleys filled with nameless horrors, a bar filled with quirky characters which isn’t entirely dissimilar to the Mos Eisley cantina, and roads filled with cars who may gobble up unwary pedestrians.  Over all, Something from the Nightside is a highly enjoyable bit of work I would recommend to fans of fantasy and mysteries alike.
